I stood amidst the opulent sprawl of my family's estate, the manicured lawns stretching out before me like a sea of green silk. Fascinating. 

On the contrary, I couldn't help but feel a sense of suffocation creeping in. 

Today was supposed to be a solemn affair, a gathering to honour the memory of the woman who meant the world to me—my mother—on the anniversary of her passing. Yet, as I glanced around at the sea of faces, all I could see were the masks of polite society, the facade of grief thinly veiling the ulterior motives lurking beneath.
